Works Minister announces agreement on open toll payment system for 12 highways, beginning Sept 2023

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced that a total of 12 highway concessionaires have agreed to introduce an open toll payment system, which will commence in September, reports Bernama.

The highways included in this system are:

  • Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE)
  • Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP)
  • Western Kuala Lumpur Traffic Dispersion Scheme Expressway (SPRINT)
  • Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas)
  • Maju Expressway (MEX)
  • Sungai Besi Expressway (BESRAYA)
  • New Pantai Expressway (NPE)
  • Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (Akleh)
  • Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)
  • Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE)
  • Penang Bridge
  • SMART tunnel

Nanta mentioned that negotiations with other highway concessionaires are still ongoing, and he hopes that more will join the initiative. He emphasised that the discussions took considerable time due to the need to address security risks associated with credit or debit card payments at toll booths.

“So far, these are the highway concessionaires that have agreed to implement the open payment system, negotiation is still underway with the others and we hope that more will come forward to participate,” he said after visiting the Traffic Monitoring Centre (TMC) at Menara Korporat, Persada PLUS in Subang on Wednesday, 10-May 2023.

The open toll payment system is part of the government’s efforts to offer alternative payment methods, in addition to cash, RFID, Touch ‘n Go cards, and SmartTag.

In a related matter, Nanta also provided an update on the upgrading of certain highway routes, specifically the widening of Pasir Gudang and Sedenak highways in Johor, which will receive an allocation of RM 525 million under Budget 2023. The minister noted that preliminary work has been completed, and the responsibility for full implementation lies with PLUS.
