Toyota C-HR set to be discontinued in Japan come July 2023; next-gen model looms closer

The spunky Toyota C-HR is set to be discontinued in Japan come July 2023, reports automotive site Kuruma News.

With its discontinuation, it’s the end of a model that’s been around since 2016, 14-December of that year in fact was the exact date of its Japanese debut.

It’s the second model to be spun from the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-C) platform (after the 4th-gen Prius), the Compact High Rider also went on sale in other Asian countries, Europe, Australia, South Africa, North America, and in Southeast Asia too.

Sales were brisk during its first few years in Japan, at its peak moving 117,299 units in 2017 before its numbers dwindled in the face of newer competition as the years went on.

Somewhat of a similar story in Malaysia as well. The Toyota C-HR made its debut here in 2018, priced at around RM 150,000 – a steep price in part due to its fully-imported (CBU Thailand) status. Naturally the small SUV wasn’t long for our market, as it was superceded by the Toyota Corolla Cross in 2021.

At point of publication, the C-HR is still sold in Thailand and in certain European markets including the United Kingdom.

What’s next for the C-HR?

It won’t just be a total end for the model as an all-new Toyota C-HR is the pipeline; and we have a concept car to speak for it.

That’s the Toyota C-HR Prologue Concept, which basically teases the quirky SUV’s second generation. Details of the model are still scarce at this point but hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains have been confirmed.
