Skoda takes over development of TSI engines as Volkswagen focuses on EVs

As carmakers start to shift more focus on the development of electric vehicles (EVs), many enthusiasts are fearful of a quiet revolution that neglects the soul of that beautiful purr of an internal combustion engine (ICE). However, don’t quickly believe in those fear-mongers as some brands have not completely neglected the engine.

According to a report, Czech carmaker, Skoda, which is under the Volkswagen Group will be taking over responsibility in further developing the EA211 series of engines from Volkswagen as the German automaker focuses on EV developments.

The engine was first introduced in 2011 and is available in four displacements – 1.0 3-cylinder (NA and turbocharged), 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, and 1.6 MPI.

Since 2012, the EA211 has been produced by Skoda in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic and has been used in various Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat, and Audi models. At first, Skoda only oversees the development of the naturally-aspirated MPI versions of the EA211 but will now be responsible for further developments of the turbocharged TSI units too.

It’s quite a major role for Skoda which is usually responsible for older automotive technologies like drum brakes or models focused on developing markets like the Indian-spec Skoda Slavia and the Volkswagen Taigun.

“The aim is to develop even more powerful and more fuel-efficient engines with lower emissions, with an emphasis on maximum reliability,” the Czech brand said.

The Czech carmaker was in charge of developing the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder version of the EA111 which was the predecessor to the EA211 and fitted in 3.5 million VW Group cars over 15 years.
