Polestar 4 has no rear window; claims to improve safety and visibility at night

Polestar’s latest model, the Polestar 4, comes with a unique design feature of no rear window. Instead, the driver can use a high-definition screen that displays a real-time feed from a rear-facing camera mounted on the roof to see what’s behind the car.

Polestar claims that this digital feed, which can be switched off to function as a regular rearview mirror providing a view of the rear passengers, enhances safety, particularly at night.

According to Polestar’s CEO as reported by Automotive News Europe, Thomas Ingenlath, the removal of the back window is an exceptional functional upgrade that provides drivers with an improved view of what’s behind them.

“At night you don’t just see two tiny dots in the rearview mirror, you see so much more. And you can also look to see your kids back there with the press of a button,” said Ingenlath.

The Polestar 4’s design element was initially introduced in the 2020 Polestar Precept concept car. With no rear window, the car’s panoramic roof extends beyond the rear passengers’ heads, allowing them to recline their seats.
