More affordable xEVs for Malaysians? After X90, Proton to launch one new electrified vehicle every year

Malaysians can look forward to at least one new electrified vehicle (xEV) from Proton annually, promises Chairman of the Geely Holding Group, Eric Li.

“We will spare no effort to support Proton with new technologies, new products, new buisness models, to help Proton launch at least one new energy vehicle model (NEV) every year,” said Li, who is also the founder of the Chinese carmaker.

NEVs is a Chinese term to describe plug-in charging capable vehicles, usually referring to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) or battery electric vehicles (BEVs), but Proton’s own press materials also refer to mild hybrids (MHEVs) as NEVs.

Li also said that Geely also plans to support the Malaysian carmaker – which it owns 49.9 percent of through a wholly-owned unit – by cultivating 5,000 talents in the NEV field, and to help build the infrastructure and ecology of the electrified vehicles sector in Malaysia.

Geely’s ‘NEV’ portfolio worldwide includes electrified models, as well as the Lynk & Co, Zeekr, and Smart EV brands, among others. Smart is coming to Malaysia in the latter half of this year, with the Smart #1 EV SUV.

  • 1.5 Standard – RM 123,800
  • 1.5 Executive – RM 130,800
