Mangosteen Tree – A Fruitful Short Tree

Mangosteen is known as the queen of tropical fruits, due to its energising, mouthwatering flavour. The mangosteen fruit is a Thai fruit, but famous all over the world. However, it is evident that Thai mangosteen, which ranks 1-3 globally, is the most delicious in the world because Thailand exports the bulk of its produce. It originates in the east and south from mangosteen trees. Most mangosteen trees are grown in the provinces of Chanthaburi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chumphon, Trat, and Rayong. Mangosteen trees cannot be raised commercially in other areas. It was due to the unsuitable weather conditions.

The mangosteen tree is a sizable perennial fruit tree. It grows up to 25 metres tall. The sap is thick and yellow-green, with black bark. The branches are separated into tiers and the canopy is pyramidal. It seems neat to enjoy the heat and humidity. 70% to 80% relative humidity is very high. The ideal temperature range is 25–35 °C. It takes more than 2,000 mm of rain per year. Additionally, there must be 150–200 wet days annually. Furthermore, the planting area must always have access to a sufficient supply of clean water. Because mangosteen is a plant with a high water transpiration rate. Sandy loam is good for mangosteen. Because the mangosteen roots eat in the deep, the soil surface is more than 50 centimetres deep and the groundwater level is more than 1 metre deep.

Before flowering, mangosteen trees need 20–30 days of continuous dry weather. Stamens on mangosteen flowers are infertile, causing tissues to produce fruit and seeds. Pollination was not the cause of its birth. Mangosteen has little chance of evolving into a new species or changing its genetic makeup. Mangosteen is therefore recognised as belonging to a single species. The mangosteen fruit may have a varied character in each region. It’s due to maintenance and various weather situations. As a result, historically, seed sowing was a common method of propagation because it was quick, simple, and had taproots. However, the drawback was that it could take up to 7 years after planting for mangosteen to bear fruit and start producing fully at the age of 13 years and above, including the height of the mangosteen tree, which is often more than 15 metres, making it difficult to harvest and has very high labour costs
