How to Draw A Cartoon Flame

Step 1

Let’s start this tutorial on how to draw a cartoon flame with the flame base! Fire is constantly changing its form. So don’t worry. It will look the same as our reference image.

As you can see, we used some curved, rounded lines for the flickering flames with very sharp, pointy tips emanating from them.

If you’re drawing your version, feel free to add more or less of these pointy bits as you like, but make sure you have at least a few! The top of this flame will be empty for now, but we will fill it soon.

Step 2

Continuing with this cartoon flame design, we will finish the flame outline you started in the previous step.

As you can see in our example, we added two more sharp flicker effects on the sides. Then we used even more curved lines, culminating in a sharp, rounded point at the top.

This pointed part will be much larger than any other pointed sections you have drawn. Then it’s time for step 3!

Step 3

In this third step, we draw another layer inside this flame. These lines largely reflect the outlines you drew in the first two steps.

These lines will help add a little more definition to the flame you’re drawing, and they’re just the beginning of the type of details we’ll draw!

Please do your best to place this layer close enough to the outline, as inside, we will add two more layers and need space for that.

Step 4

In this fourth step of our tutorial on how to draw a cartoon flame, you’ll add another layer to the flame.

This next layer is slightly different from the previous layer, as shown in the reference image. The previous level mirrored the main outline closely, but this one will not follow the same idea.

Instead, it follows the outline of the previous layer. Instead, only two pointed extensions stick out. one on the left and one on top.

Otherwise, it will be quite round and curvy. In the next step of the guide, we can then add the final points and details!

Step 5

Now you’re ready to finish the final details of this cartoon flame before adding some final touches in the final step! This step is all about adding the final layer of flame.

Again, this will have the same general shape as the previous floor and will be the smallest in the series.

As mentioned in the instructions, you can even slightly customize the shape if you want to create your twist!

You can add some extra details when you’re done with the design.

The idea is to draw the wood under that fire and add more details, like rocks around it.

You could even draw cartoon characters sitting by the fire roasting marshmallows or telling spooky stories!

Step 6

This brings you to the final step of this cartoon flame drawing! In this case, we will finish with some colors. Fire is quite hot by nature, so we used many warm colors for this fire.

This means different shades of red, orange, and yellow for this fire. You could use similar colors for your cartoon flame, but feel free to change them up if you’d like!

There are several different artistic mediums that you can use to color it. We recommend watercolors as they create a softer look that goes well with the fire look.
