How NGOs Are Empowering Communities to Combat Malnutrition: Success Stories

These days, malnutrition has become a global problem – one that affects millions of people, especially in developing countries such as India. A non-governmental organization or NGO for malnutrition plays a major role in this context by helping the affect combat this threat. These organizations do so by empowering communities by way of different initiatives. So, here we will look at how these NGOs are making a lasting effect in the battle against malnutrition and a couple of success stories.

 

Community awareness and education

 

When you think of ways in which aforementioned NGOs are helping the impoverished fight the spectre of malnutrition this is the first one that comes to mind. To save malnourished children this way, NGOs are informing people about the need to have a balanced diet and what constitutes proper nutrition. They are also trying to educate them about the long-term effects that malnutrition might have on them. They are organizing the likes of workshops, educational campaigns, and seminars to equip people with the knowledge that they need to make healthier choices regarding their food and understand why nutrition is important for their well-being.

In 2015 and 2016 World Vision India, a leading name in the context of fighting malnutrition in India, helped a family of daily wage labourers and their kids Vidhya, her brother Prince, and three other siblings fight malnutrition. They did so by providing them with a pair of goats each of those years. The family now has 22 goats, the parents have left their jobs, and they now earn a living by selling these goats. They also use the milk of these goats to provide nutrition to their kids. They are financially much better and have been able to take proper care of their kids as well.

 

For example, when Vidhya fell ill once in this period, they sold off one of the goats and made sure that she got proper treatment for her ailment.

 

Laxmi, a two-year-old girl was so weak that she could not even stand on her own because of malnourishment. This was when her grandfather brought her to a camp conducted by World Vision India along with the Jharkhand State Nutrition Mission for treating acute malnutrition among women. Thanks to the help provided to her as part of its CMAM (Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition) programme she is now getting significantly better and progressing to being properly nourished.
