GWM Cannon previewed, will launch in Malaysia later this year, to challenge Triton and Hilux

At the ongoing 2023 Malaysia Autoshow, GWM has previewed the GWM Cannon, a brand-new pick-up truck that is set to go on sale later this year.

Power for the Malaysian-spec is expected to be derived from a turbodiesel 2.0-litre engine that does 163 PS and 400 Nm, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, the latter is sourced from ZF.

Two units of the GWM Cannon are on display, with varying equipment. The white Cannon is presumably the entry-level model, seeing that it gets halogen projector headlights, 17-inch dark silver alloy wheels, bulb-type tail lights, and analog instrument cluster.

Meanwhile, the blue unit is the higher spec variant. It gets LED projector headlights, larger 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, LED tail lights, heated seats, as well as digital instrument cluster.

Common equipment for both variants, at least from the show units, include leather upholstery, sunroof, cruise control, paddle shifters, electric parking brake with auto hold, drive mode selector, and rear air-conditioning vents.

When the GWM Cannon goes on sale in Malaysia later this year, it will be yet another Chinese pick-up truck contender, joining the likes of the Peugeot Landtrek, Maxus T70, and JMC Vigus Pro. Should the Mitsubishi Triton, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu D-Max be worried?
