Fight Gum Disease and Preserve Your Oral Health: Effective Gum Disease Treatment

If your gums are red and swollen, or bleed easily during brushing or flossing, you may have early-stage gum disease. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss.

Gingivitis is reversible with proper at-home oral care and regular professional dental cleanings. More serious stages of gum disease, including periodontitis, may require more advanced treatment.

Scaling and Root Planing

A common and very effective treatment for Gum Disease Treatment, scaling and root planing, or a deep cleaning is often the first step in treating advanced periodontitis. In addition, it can also prevent further loss of tooth and bone tissue as well as improve your oral health.

During this procedure, the dental hygienist cleans the pockets around your teeth and below the gum line where bacteria breed and cause inflammation (swelling) in the gum tissue. Typically, you will be numbed to make this process less uncomfortable. In some cases, it may take more than one appointment to ensure that each half or quarter of the mouth is adequately numbed.

Following the procedure, patients will often experience sensitivity or soreness for a few days while the gum tissue heals. Over-the-counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen, are very effective in alleviating discomfort. Your dentist might also prescribe a desensitizing toothpaste or dentifrice with potassium nitrate to help reduce tooth sensitivity and pain while your teeth are healing.

Antibiotics

Gum disease can cause bad breath (halitosis) and gums that bleed easily. If untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. One stage of Gum Disease Treatment, gingivitis, is reversible with good oral hygiene. But left untreated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis, when the bacteria that are causing the problem seep under the gums and start attacking the tissue and bone that hold your teeth in place.

Antibiotics are powerful germ-fighting tools when used correctly. But overuse and improper use have led to antibiotic resistance. Bacteria change so that antibiotics no longer work against them.

Only take antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor. Never save antibiotics for later use. Doing so increases your risk of side effects, such as stomach pain, diarrhoea and feeling or being sick. Also, don’t skip doses or take a double dose. Both of these can increase the length of time it takes for your infection to get better and can increase your risk of getting an infection again.

Bone Grafting

In severe cases of Gum Disease Treatment, the bones around your teeth can start to deteriorate. This leads to gaps where the tooth root should be. To remedy this, a periodontist might recommend a bone graft.

The procedure involves placing a tissue graft over the exposed root and then adding bone filler or a barrier membrane. The graft material may be from the patient’s own body (autograft), donated bone from another person or a bovine animal (xenograft) or a synthetic material.

Bone grafts are usually performed six months before dental implant placement to give the bone time to heal. During this time patients can expect some discomfort and swelling, which can be managed by taking prescription ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed. Once the graft has healed, the dentist will provide clear guidance on how to care for the area. This will likely include avoiding excessive physical activity for some time and cleaning the area as instructed.

Flap Surgery/Pocket Reduction Surgery

A periodontist or oral surgeon will make a tiny incision in your gum, pull back the tissue and remove the bacteria hiding under it. The tooth root surfaces may also be cleaned, and the bone may be smoothed or reshaped (called a pocket reduction procedure). If necessary, medication will be injected into the area to eliminate bacteria and promote healing.Contact for treatment at BellaViso.

This surgery can decrease bacteria, plaque and tartar that are impossible to reach with brushing and floss. It can reverse early damage from periodontitis and help prevent future infections. Combined with proper oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings, it is the most effective treatment for gum disease.

It is important to understand that even with gum surgery, pockets can still fill up again with bacteria if the patient does not follow good oral hygiene habits. For this reason, it is extremely important to brush and floss regularly.
