Chery asks the Philippines: Do you want the eQ1 EV?

With new legislation, more charging stations and zero import duties, electric vehicles (EV) may soon go mainstream in the Philippines.

One of the manufacturers that is keen to draw new customers to zero-emission vehicles is Chinese carmaker Chery.

That’s why the company is currently conducting a survey on Filipinos’ interest in EVs, particularly the Chery eQ1 hatchback. You can access it here.

The three-door eQ1 has been in production since 2016 and is larger than the Chery QQ Ice Cream Sundae, which is currently a gray import from SuperCharged Motors Inc.

The styling is reminiscent of the Toyota iQ and the previous-generation Chevrolet Spark. Up front are large wraparound headlights with a rectangular lower grill area.

Down the side, the contrasting roof, door mirrors and roof rails give the eQ1 a sporty look, while the upward beltline makes the EV look taller. Matte-black plastic adds a certain ruggedness to the profile

At the back, more matte-black plastic is used, which is useful for preventing paint scuffs. The silver trim on the lower rear bumper completes the look.

Inside, the eQ1 has a colorful interior with a huge center touchscreen infotainment system. Round air-conditioning vents and a digital gauge cluster give the car a funky and modern feel.

280-km max range

Chery said the eQ1 will have an all-aluminum body, a 76 PS electric motor, and a 40.3-kWh battery pack.

The company also claimed a maximum range of 281 km.

The survey asks about interior and exterior styling, along with features that potential buyers would like to see in an EV.

It also asks buyers how much they would be willing to pay for the eQ1, with choices ranging from ₱1.1 million to ₱1.4 million. Respondents can also specify their own price.

With perks for EV owners like number-coding exemptions and fiscal incentives in the works for buyers, and what looks like a stylishly decent and modern kit, would you consider a Chery eQ1?
