With the passage of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, many carmakers are jumping onto the electric-vehicle (EV) scene.

These include Hyundai with its IONIQ 5 and the upcoming IONIQ 6, along with Kia’s EV6. But BYD has long had an all-EV lineup, which it showcased at the 2023 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS).

“EVs offer a number of benefits over traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, including lower emissions, reduced fuel costs, and smoother and quieter operations,” said Mark Tieng, president and CEO of Solar Transport and Automotive Resources Corp., which distributes BYD in the Philippines.

“In fact, as of April 13, 2023, BYD has saved 31,941,212,881 kilograms of carbon emissions equivalent to planting around 900 million trees,” he added.

Meanwhile, the BYD Tang EV crossover has a dual-motor system that provides all-wheel drive and better handling and vehicle control.

The car has a range of up to 500 kilometers on a single charge. It can be charged to 80 percent in just 30 minutes using a DC fast charger or add a 50-kilometer range every 60 minutes with a standard AC charger.

Inside, the Tang is spacious and comfortable, with premium materials used throughout. As it seats seven passengers, BYD said it is ideal for family trips.

The third BYD EV on display was the Han Sedan.

The 100-percent electric sedan, which serves as BYD’s flagship model, is powered by a dual-motor system that provides all-wheel drive and better handling.

Like the Tang, the Han can be charged to 80 percent in just 30 minutes using a DC fast charger and a 50-kilometer range for every hour using a standard AC Charger.

The car has a claimed maximum range of 500 kilometers on a single charge and comes with several smart features and intelligent driving assistance.

“At BYD, we believe that sustainability is not just a buzzword — it’s a way of life,” Tieng said. “We’re proud to be a company that’s dedicated to making the world a better place, and this new technology is just one example of how we’re doing that.”

With EVs gaining popularity, with the help of financial incentives, will BYD’s decision to join the electric revolution early pay off?
