ASEAN’s Toyota Yaris Cross debuts; DNGA platform, hybrid available – HR-V rival also previews Perodua D66B

This here is the all-new 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross for our region, having just been unveiled in Indonesia. The small SUV also could preview the upcoming Perodua D66B for Malaysia.

Locally-assembled in the country as well, here’s the variant breakdown and prices:

  • Yaris Cross Hybrid GR Sport: IDR 460m (~RM 140k)
  • Yaris Cross Non Hybrid GR Sport: IDR 450m (~RM 137k)
  • Yaris Cross S CVT: IDR 416m (~RM 126k)
  • Yaris Cross S Manual: IDR 405m (~RM 123k)
  • Yaris Cross G CVT: IDR 363m (~RM 110k)
  • Yaris Cross G Manual: IDR 350m (~RM 107k)

Across the variants, two engines are on offer: a hybrid and a regular one. The former is driven by a 1.5-litre 2NR-VEX engine – essentially an electrified Myvi engine – making 92 PS and 121 Nm, paired to an electric motor producing 80 PS and 141 Nm.

The hybrid battery is of the lithium ion (Li-Ion) variety, and combined figures haven’t been shared at point of publication.

Completing the duo is a 1.5-litre 2NR-VE mill, producing 107 PS and 138 Nm. Transmission duties are handled by a CVT-automatic gearbox or a 5-speed manual.

The all-new Yaris Cross sits on a 2,620 mm wheelbase, is 4,310 mm long, 1,615 mm tall, and 1,770 mm wide, and it’s spun from the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform.

With a size like this, it’s only within milimetres of the Honda HR-V, it’s nearest competitor.

Further details on equipment will be added as we have it, but what’s been announced are a panoramic sunroof, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with ‘wireless smartphone connectivity’ (presumably wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay), to go with a digital instrument cluster, as well as a powered boot with kick sensor, power-adjustable seats, ambient lighting, and a wireless charger.

The Toyota Safety Sense suite of active driver assists is also part of the car. 10 colours will be offered to Indonesian customers, three of which are two-tone.
