A game changer: Future Ford EVs to utilize Tesla supercharging stations in the US and Canada

Ford Motor Company has announced that its future electric vehicles (EVs) will soon be able to use Tesla supercharging stations in the US and Canada. However, it won’t be implemented immediately as the compatibility between the two brands will fully take effect by 2025.

The announcement was made during a live Twitter Space event featuring Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Compatibility between Tesla and Ford chargers may indicate that future Blue Oval EVs will have two charging ports. However, another likely scenario is that Ford or Tesla will offer an adapter to customers so they can utilize the supercharging stations.

The planned compatibility will roll out first with the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford F-150 Lightning, and the Ford E-Transit, but it’s expected to happen sometime in 2025 with future Blue Oval EVs that will use the Standard NACS connector.

The Tesla NACS standard for its chargers has been used in the US and Canada since the EV brand launched the Model S. The connector works for home charging stations, DC fast charging, and other fast-charging sites using an adapter.

The Blue Oval brand and Tesla partnership will ensure that Ford EV customers can utilize Tesla’s vast network of over 12,000 supercharging stations across the US and  Canada.

Tesla has also opened its NACS standard to all automakers, making it easier for them to adopt the technology for their future vehicles.
