Hyundai may still build its own mid-engine supercar — report

Over the last four decades, Korean carmaker Hyundai has built its reputation for offering sensible and practical cars.

And for buyers who want more, there’s the Genesis luxury brand and the high-performance N Division. The latter has produced blisteringly fast cars like the Hyundai i30 N hatchback.

But Hyundai has not yet set aside plans to create its own mid-engine supercar, according to a February 2023 Carscoops report.

“There’s been such efforts going on,” said Hyundai design director Hak Soo Ha at the sidelines of the 2023 Canadian International AutoShow.

“But at what point we make it economically viable, or do we do product planning, or on what donor platform we bring it to market, what powertrain, that’s all kind of up in the air,” he added.

Known as the “Chairman’s Car,” the proposed flagship Hyundai has been stalled because of issues like a potentially high selling price (projected to go over ₱8.3 million). 

But Ha said developers are starting to address these concerns, including the possibility of using donor platforms from other Hyundai models to reduce costs.

Former Hyundai N Division Albert Biermann said the proposed Hyundai supercar would be similar to the Honda NSX hybrid supercar.

He added that it could be powered by a gasoline engine, a hybrid-electric powerplant or a hydrogen fuel cell.

On July 2022, Hyundai showcased the driveable N Vision 74 concept supercar. It is powered by a 62.4-kWh battery pack and two electric motors, both on the rear axle, that produce a combined output of 680 PS.

The concept also features tanks that can store up to 4.2 kg of hydrogen. Hyundai claims a 0 to 97 km/h time of under 4 seconds and a top speed of over 250 km/h.
