Present at the launch of the locally-assembled (CKD) Mercedes-Benz EQS 500 4Matic was Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, who announced that the government aims to provide 10,000 units of EV chargers by 2025 and targets 15 percent of TIV for electrified vehicles (xEV, hybrids included) by 2030.
“MITI expects that the domestic automotive industry will continue to be resilient and become a major contributor to the country’s economy by 2030,” Tengku Zafrul said.
“We are committed to drive the efforts of attracting investments in EV and achieve the national target of 15 percent of TIV for electrified vehicles including hybrids by the year 2030, and 30 percent of TIV by the year 2040.
“In terms of charging infrastructure, the government aims to provide at least 10,000 units of public charging facilities by the year 2025,” he added. Currently, there are still less than 1,000 EV chargers nationwide, with 700 units reported in November 2022.

Tengku Zafrul said that the national EV task force led by MITI will – together with the relevant government ministries, government agencies, and private sector representatives – be established to carry out implementation of EV development strategies.
“The national EV task force’s main focus is to address the challenges faced by higher adoption of EV in the market, enhance EV charging infrastructure, and promote investments in the ecosystem.
“Notable initiatives which are still work in progress include improving the AP policies to facilitate EV importation, developing standards and improving procedures to establish the EV charging infrastructure as soon as possible, as well as attracting investors in the EV ecosystem including the assembly of critical EV components and aftermarket activities,” said Tengku Zafrul.
He added that moving forward, EVs will continue to be the catalyst for the automotive industry as more funds, investments and tax incentives are geared towards the circular economy and green technology, and support Malaysia’s target of net zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
