Chery Malaysia have inked a deal with Inokom Corporation, opening up the brand’s local assembly in Malaysia.
This signing entails Chery cars to be locally-assembled (CKD) in Kulim, Kedah. The first two models of Chery Malaysia here will be the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro large SUV, as well as the smaller Omoda 5.
Lofty ambitions follow, as Chery plans to make Malaysia the region’s assembly hub, producing cars with internal combustion engines (ICE), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) for certain export markets.
Research and development (R&D) centres for regional testing, training and parts distribution will also be set up here, and Chery says that collaboration with local universities is also in the pipeline.
As for the products themselves, Chery says that they plan to build 70 showrooms nationwide. Besides the ICE Tiggo 8 Pro and Omoda 5, the company plans to introduce the Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV, Tiggo 7 Pro PHEV, Omoda 5 EV, and one more mystery model in the future.
