Battle of the maxi scoots: Peugeot XP400 versus KYMCO Xciting VS 400

There’s usually a motorcycle model at bike shows which could be seen as the crowd favorite, kind of like the prom queen, in a manner of speaking.

In the recent Makina Moto Show, there were a slew of product launches and exhibits that generated impressive foot traffic. I have noticed, however, that guests tended to linger around two models that were launched at the event – the Peugeot XP400 and the KYMCO Xciting VS 400.

In fact, I had a hard time getting clean photos of the two because potential buyers just wouldn’t leave them alone. Let’s have a run down of the features of these two tollway-legal maxi scooters and learn what the fuss is all about, shall we?

Peugeot XP400

Sure, the brand name is a bit of a challenge to pronounce for most Pinoy buyers but it is precisely what ads to its prestige. Throw in that rugged adventure-themed styling and you have a maxi scooter that will surely tug at our heart strings.

The XP400 runs on 17-inch front and 15-inch rear wheels, a rather tall configuration for a maxi scoot but I suppose it enables the rider to tackle rugged terrain. Speaking of which, the XP400 comes in two variants – the road-oriented Allure and the off-road capable GT. Both come with a 5-inch TFT screen with turn-by-turn navigation, along with keyless operation, USB charging port and ample under-seat storage.

At ₱555,900, the price of the XP400 might be a bit steep for some buyers on a budget.

KYMCO Xciting VS 400

The Xciting VS 400 is a significantly more practical option as you only need to fork out ₱399,000. Despite its relatively affordable price, the KYMCO Xciting VS 400 is equipped with the best electronic safety aids available in the market.

Aside from a dual-channel Bosch ABS, the Xciting VS 400 also has Traction Control System to help keep its rubber side down even on varying road conditions. Speaking of which, the Xciting VS 400 runs on 120/70-15 (front) and 150/70-14 (rear) tires for added high-speed stability.

The winning formula

So, what made these two maxi scooters so popular? Well, they both offer long-distance touring comfort and the convenience of a twist-and-go transmission (CVT). Of course, tollway access is a definite selling point and both their displacements sit right at the minimum requirement.

Aside from the pricing, the Peugeot XP400 and the KYMCO Xciting VS 400 mainly differ in their character. The former is intended for adventure touring while the latter is designed for sport touring. If budget is not an issue, then making a choice between the two will just be a matter of preference and riding style.

Heck, if budget is really not a concern, I’ll get both if I were you.
