Geely Milky Way L7 debuts in China – a newer, 1,370 km PHEV next gen Proton X70 we can’t get

Geely has unveiled the Geely Milky Way L7 (银河L7) in China and it is on display at the ongoing 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. Milky Way is a new subsidiary under the larger Geely Group that focuses on NEVs (New Energy Vehicles, Chinese term for electrified vehicles) in China.

Right off the bat, the Milky Way L7 does share some similarities with the recently-launched Geely Boyue L. That’s because the new Milky Way L7 sits on the e-CMA platform, similar to the CMA platform that underpins the Boyue L – a new generation successor to the Geely Boyue, the donor car for our Proton X70.

Despite being a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, Geely gave the Milky Way L7 almost an EV-like front fascia that covers up most of the front-end. The only air intake is beneath the number plate, which feeds cool air for the turbocharged 1.5-litre 4-cylinder BHE15-BFZ 4-cylinder petrol engine.

Combined system output for the Milky Way L7 stands at 163 PS and it features a 3-gear hybrid electric drive system. The century sprint is completed in just 6.9 seconds. The new SUV consumes just 5.23-litre/100 km under the CLTC test cycle, and is able to return a range of up to 1,370 km.

Being a new marque under the larger Geely Group, the Milky Way also gets a brand-new logo; one that features Geely’s pentagonal-shape logo, but tweaked to become a simpler-looking rectangle.

Stepping inside, the Geely Milky Way L7’s cabin is largely similar to the Boyue L, with a massive 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster catered to the driver. There’s also 13.2-inch portrait-style infotainment screen and a 16.2-inch display for the front passenger, which are powered by the Snapdragon 8155 system-on-chip (SoC), running on Geely’s Milky Way N operating system (OS).
