MG made its name in the early part of the 20th century by producing some of the finest two-seat sports cars in the world.

Although the British marque, now under Chinese ownership, revived the GT nameplate, it was for a sporty sedan. But MG now has a true sports car that made its debut at Auto Shanghai 2023.

The production version of the MG Cyberster was launched at the show on April 2023 after the concept version had been unveiled at Auto Shanghai 2021.

The Cyberster is MG’s first sports car since the discontinuation of the mid-engined MG TF on March 2011.

Sharp, distinctive styling

The low-slung Cyberster follows MGs of old by featuring a long hood.

The crystal-like LED headlights lead to an aggressive lower bumper with various scoops to aid with aerodynamics and cooling.

A raked windshield complements the high beltline and huge alloy wheels. But the Cyberster’s party pieces are its scissor doors, carried over from the concept car.

Out back, the intricate LED taillights not only frame the Kammback rear end, but also feature turn signals shaped like arrows that also take inspiration from the Union Jack, the UK’s national flag.

“Our intention was to create a completely new roadster ready for a new generation of sportscar drivers and which opens a bold and compelling new chapter for MG,” said Carl Gotham, advanced design director of MG’s Marylebone design studio in London.

“The focus for Cyberster was to create a design that was respectful of the brand’s illustrious past and to bring back that sporting bloodline, while also being absolutely clear that it should be modern and forward-facing like the MG of today, completely in-tune with the rapid transition to electric vehicles,” he added.

Up to 544 PS

Although MG has not yet released official details of the Cyberster’s interior or powertrain, filings at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology indicate two options.

The first is a rear-wheel-drive variant with 313 PS, weighing in at 1,850 kg. The second is an all-wheel-drive variant with 544 PS and a curb weight of 1,985 kg.

The Chinese carmaker’s new roadster is expected to arrive for sale in the UK and Europe in the summer of 2024. It will take on the second-generation Tesla Roadster, which is also expected to launch this year.
